Shopify Development: Built to Convert, Not Just to Launch

Shopify is where serious ecommerce gets built, and where the sale is won or lost in the checkout. We build Shopify stores engineered for conversion, because 70% of carts are abandoned, mostly over problems good design fixes.

Shopify specialists

Commerce that converts, not just a pretty storefront.

Shopify gets you selling fast, but the default theme leaves money on the table. We build stores tuned for speed, search, and checkout conversion.

The honest answer first

Anyone can spin up a Shopify store. The money is made in the parts most builds neglect: a fast storefront and a frictionless checkout. The platform is proven; the difference between stores is execution.

Shopify is a genuine commerce engine, its merchants moved record volumes, so the question isn’t whether the platform works. It’s whether your store converts the traffic you worked to get.

And the data says most don’t, for fixable reasons: seven in ten carts are abandoned, much of it over checkout friction and speed. We build Shopify stores around those numbers. Here they are.

A proven engine

Shopify moves serious money.

First, the platform is no question. Shopify merchants set a record $14.6 billion in Black Friday-Cyber Monday sales in 2025, up 27% year over year, peaking at $5.1 million in sales per minute across more than 81 million consumers.

You’re not betting on whether Shopify can handle commerce. You’re deciding whether your store is built to capture its share, which comes down to speed and checkout.

The leak

Seven in ten carts are abandoned.

Here’s where most stores bleed. The documented average online cart abandonment rate is 70%, measured across 50 studies. The leading causes aren’t price; they’re design: surprise costs, a too-long or complicated checkout, and required account creation.

That’s the opportunity hiding in plain sight. Most of those abandoned carts are recoverable through better checkout design, not more traffic.

The fixes pay

Better checkout, and Shop Pay, lift conversion hard.

The recoverable upside is large and measured. Baymard finds the average large ecommerce site can lift conversion 35% through better checkout design alone. And Shopify’s own accelerated checkout, Shop Pay, lifts conversion up to 50% versus guest checkout.

These aren’t marginal tweaks. Checkout is the highest-leverage surface in any store, and it’s exactly where we focus the build.

Friction is fields

The average checkout asks for nearly twice what it should.

A lot of checkout friction is literally too many form fields. Baymard finds the average US checkout shows 23.48 form elements, when an ideal one needs as few as 12 to 14. Every unnecessary field is another chance for a ready buyer to give up.

We design the path to purchase down to the minimum: fewer fields, smart defaults, accelerated payment, so the checkout helps the sale instead of fighting it.

Speed compounds

A tenth of a second moves revenue.

Speed sits underneath all of it. A Deloitte and Google study of 37 brands and 30 million-plus sessions found a single 0.1-second improvement in mobile speed lifted retail conversions 8.4% and spend per visitor 9.2%.

With typical ecommerce conversion rates sitting between 1.6% and 2.9%, every fractional gain in speed and friction is real money. That’s why performance and checkout are the first things we engineer, not the last.

How we run it

We build Shopify stores around the checkout, not just the catalog.

A MoonSauce Shopify build is engineered for the numbers above: a fast storefront, a minimal high-converting checkout with accelerated payment, and the conversion-rate work most stores skip. The platform already proves it can move billions. Our job is making sure your store captures its share instead of leaking it at the cart.

Straight answers

Frequently asked

Why build on Shopify?
Because it’s a proven commerce engine, merchants set a record $14.6 billion in a single BFCM weekend, and it handles payments, security, and scale so you don’t have to. The platform isn’t the variable; execution is. A well-built Shopify store converts the traffic you earn; a default one leaks it at the checkout.
What increases Shopify conversions?
Speed and checkout, above all. A 0.1-second speed gain lifts retail conversions 8.4%, better checkout design can add up to 35%, and Shop Pay lifts conversion up to 50% versus guest checkout. Most stores leave these on the table. We build around them from the start.
Why do so many carts get abandoned?
The average cart abandonment rate is 70%, and the top causes are design problems, not price: surprise costs, a too-long or complicated checkout, and forced account creation. The average checkout asks for nearly twice the fields it needs. Fixing that is the single highest-leverage thing you can do for a store.
Is a custom Shopify build worth it over a theme?
It depends on your goals, but the value is in conversion and speed, not visual novelty. We focus the budget on a fast storefront and a minimal, high-converting checkout rather than flourishes that slow the site. Whether we customize a theme or build bespoke, the test is whether it converts.
How does MoonSauce approach Shopify development?
We engineer for the checkout and for speed first: minimal form fields, accelerated payment like Shop Pay, fast load, and ongoing conversion-rate work. The catalog and design matter, but the money is made or lost at the cart, so that’s where we concentrate the build.
