AEO matters because the answer surface is no longer niche. Google’s AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users, up from 2 billion a year earlier, and Google says the feature is driving over 10% more queries where it appears.

That’s the new front page of search: an answer, assembled by Google, for billions of people. Being absent from it is being absent from search.

When the AI answers, almost nobody clicks through.

Here’s why ranking alone is no longer enough. When an AI Overview appears, users click a traditional result just 8% of the time, versus 15% without one, and only about 1% click a link inside the summary. Across all Google searches, 68% now end with no click to the open web at all.

What wins citations

AI answers cite brands, not keyword tricks.

What earns an AI citation is brand authority. Across 75,000 brands, the strongest predictors of AI Overview visibility were branded web mentions (0.664 correlation) and YouTube mentions (around 0.74), far ahead of raw backlinks (0.218). Raw site page count had essentially no correlation.

In other words, AEO is digital-PR and authority work, getting your brand mentioned, cited, and talked about across the web, not stuffing keywords. That’s exactly what we build.
